Colossians 3:5-9

Death to Sin

Our Confession of Faith at Westminster meeting in 1643 finished its final draft in 1647 writing out the whole frame work of Christian doctrine and Theology. Sanctification: Sec. II. “This sanctification is throughout, in the whole man; yet imperfect in this life, there abideth still some remnants of corruption in every part; whence ariseth a continual and irreconcilable war, the flesh lusting against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh.

Sec. III. In which war, although the remaining corruption, for a time, may much prevail; yet through the continual supply of strength from the sanctifying Spirit of Christ, the regenerate part doth overcome, and so, the saints grow in grace, perfecting holiness in fear of God.”

This section in Colossians Paul explains to us rudiments of the sins of the flesh and the explicit command to overcome these sins by putting them aside and putting on the new man by the Spirit of Christ.

  1. Reasons why we are to put these sins to death:

  1. Because God’s wrath will ultimately fall upon those who practice these sins – v.6 Rom1:18; I Thess. 5:9

  2. Because these sins were a part of the believers life to variant degrees Eh. 2:1-5, (Spurgeon, MacArthur)

We must all examine our hearts and confess our sins. Ask the Lord for forgiveness and renew our fellowship with Him. I John 1:9, 10 Both personal and public sins must be put to death
