Genesis 8:-9:1-17

God’s Covenant with Noah

Introduction:

The definition of the word “Covenant” from the Hebrew text (berith) means “to cut” as to cut an animal in half. This is to be a treaty or alliance between two parties of people. We think of in our day a marriage covenant between a man and a woman which is an agreement by vows until death due them part. In the business world we still use the same kind of language, “to cut a deal” by way of contract. (Gen. 15:8-18) When God makes a covenant with us, He swears by His good name which is holy and perfect in all His ways. (Heb. 6:13) The Greek rendering for covenant is essentially the same (diatheke) meaning, “last will and testament,” a legal writing of a will of the deceased.
