The better you know God’s world the better you will know God’s Word!
We live in a wonderful world full of so many things! It is a real world with touch, taste, sound, smell, space, time, and all kinds of other stuff. Perhaps you have wondered what relationship there is between getting a good education or knowing about the world and knowing God better. Can learning Math, and Science, and Biology, and all of that stuff you are learning, help you know God better? Are they of any use to the Christian? Yes they are! The Bible says, “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.” (Ps 19:1) And “Whether you eat or drink, or do anything else, do all to the glory of God” (1 Cor 10:31) And so you can learn about God’s world to the glory of God. But let’s be specific. How can learning all about the creation and the things in it glorify God? I want to focus on one particular way that that can happen, and that is this:
The better you know God’s WORLD, the better you will know God’s WORD, and therefore the better you will know God because God uses his WORLD in his WORD to reveal himself.
The Earth is full of the glory of God
Ps 19:1-3 The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard.
Isaiah 6:3 And one cried to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!”
Psalm 104:24 O LORD, how manifold are Your works! In wisdom You have made them all. The earth is full of Your possessions
God’s world truly reveals God Rom 1:20
God desires for you see and know his glory through the world
Ps 111:2 Great are the works of the LORD, studied by all who delight in them.
Is 40:26 – look and see – not merely it, but who
Ps 107:23-32 To the sea in ships
God uses analogies of things in his world to talk about himself – you must know them well to understand his revelation.
Lamb of God – Jn 1:29 Not camel, or hippo, or alligator of God
LORD is my Shepherd – Ps 23 – what is a shepherd is a butcher
Hen –Mt 23:37 –how? peck at their heads, attack?
God is Light -1 John 1:5 –life-giving, warm, cheering, growth, knowledge (sight), SAD
Go and know the world yourself and teach your children about the world
This must be part of your curriculum
By book learning – it is great to study things through formalized education
By first-hand experience – if you are only ever in a class room you will not get it!
The force and weight and glory that the world contains needs to be stored in you deeply
Consuming Fire- Heb 12:29 – light a big fire, go to bon fires
Shield and Sun – Ps 84:11- play with sticks, shields – see warfare and the protection of a shield
When you see a reference to the world in the Word – note it, see to it that you understand it, have experienced it, and that you follow what is being revealed through it.
The better you know God’s world the better you will know God’s Word! Learn about his world, go see it, touch it, taste it, smell it, read about it. Teach it to your children. Know God’s world to his glory and you will be better able to know his word to his glory.
