Revelation 4:1-11

God’s Worth

Now that we have studied the seven churches with their various characteristics, we now come to some what of the chronology of the church’s history down through the centuries. Of course we must not forget the big picture which is the resurrection and ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ and His Second Coming for His Church on the last glorious day.

Here in chapters four and five there is a context that should be taken as a unit. These two chapters also stand at the head of the next sections which comprise: The seven Seals, The seven Trumpets, and the Seven Bowls.

  1. What John Saw – v.1-4

  1. Heaven open

  1. John is immediately attracted to His Savior v.1

  2. What exactly does John see?

Ans. John sees a vision of God the Father which is limited in scope – John 1:18; Isa. 40:25,26

  1. John sees God sitting on His throne through the medium of precious stones.

Jasper, Sardius and a rainbow like unto emerald – Rom. 5:1-2

  1. Twenty four thrones surround the dominant throne of God

  1. Elders sitting upon their thrones – Matt. 19;28; Rev. 3:21

  2. Elders wearing white garments and crowns – II Tim. 4:7; II Cor. 6;7; II Cor. 10:4

  1. What John Heard –v.5; cf. II Cor. 12:1

  1. Peals of thunder – Exo. 19:6; Turn To: Job 37:1-13

  2. Seven lamps and Seven Spirits of God

  1. What the Angels are Doing – v. 6-11

  1. Some speculate the four Gospel accounts that speak of Jesus

  2. The context and other texts concur that it is Seraphim angels – Isa. 6:1-3; Eze. 10:20,21

  1. What the angles are engaged in:

  1. They are worshipping God day and night –v.8

  2. They are declaring God’s worthiness – Separate from and exalted above His creation – Hab. 1:13; I John 1:5

  1. Since the angels and elders in heaven are worshiping God. We the church members of the household of faith are obligated to join them in the abundance of praise in worship.

  1. Let us worship God like the Angels and Elders who acknowledge God who has created everything. Psa. 19:1 (Calvin, “Creation is the theatre of His glory”) the error of evolution which gives credit to non-being for existence. (Spurgeon, “Evolution is an abyss of absurdity”)

  1. Let us worship God like the Elders for our glorious salvation. They have no reason to hold on to their crowns because they are saved by grace and grace alone. See Rev. 5:9
