I Corinthians 10:1-5

Rejecting God’s Blessing

Introduction:

Donald Grey Barnhouse tells a story about a boy in the 4th grade who so often came to school chewing bubble gum; but the teacher laid the rules down that bubble gum was not allowed during the class time. He rebelled so often and the teacher caught him blowing bubbles, she went over to him and literally pulled the gum out of his mouth. He asked to be excused later in the day and went down to the boiler room and set the waste paper barrel on fire. When the firemen got there, they were able to detect how the fire started. The rebellious boy eventually admitted he started the fire.

The boy Barnhouse said in effect, I am on the throne in my life, and I want everybody else to bow down before me. I want to rule. When I want anything, I want… If I want bubble gum, I am to have it. If anybody takes it away from me, I have a right to lash out and destroy anything that stands in the way.” So the rebellious Israelites said, don’t take my idols away. God blessed them over and over again, keeping them from danger of their enemies, supplying all their physical needs, shade, comfort, food, water and worship around the tabernacle of God’s presence. (II Cor. 6:16)
