The apostle Paul mentored his beloved son in the Lord, Timothy. Paul instilled in Timothy what sound doctrine is, what it meant to imitate him as he did other churches he founded; the Corinthian church, the Thessalonian church and the church at Philippi. (Phil. 2:19-23) Paul was goal conscious – I Tim. 1:5 “But the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.” Phil. 3:14 “I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”
Reaching Our Goals By Submission
The Amish philosophy
How can we live for Christ in this world?
We must recognize that the world is crooked and perverse – Turn To: Eph. 4:17-19 (II Pet. 1:19)
We do not have the world’s goals in our life.
Three specific goals
Submission to God by “doing all things without complaining or arguing” v. 14 (grumbling or disputing)
Live blameless lives before the church and the world – v. 15
Holding fast the word of Life –v.16
Disputing – The Gk. Word is dialogismos where we get our word “dialogue”
The complaining parable – Matthew 20:1-16 cf. Luke 5:30
Isarel’s complaining for forty years plus in captivity in Egypt.
Application for us: Get out of the habit of complaining!
Reaching Our Goals By Being Blameless – v. 15
Blameless does not mean sinless – I Tim. 3:1-7
Above board in human relationships: business, employment and relaxation
Daniel above reproach – Dan. 6:7-24
Count it a blessing if our enemies accuse us of being Bible readers and students.
Our Goals is to line up with God’s will – Eph. 1:4
Real Sanctification is a realization of how sinful we are.
Real Sanctification is our openness with God – Psa. 139:23-24
Be conscious of the fact that we must reach our goal – Phil. 1:6
Be conscious of the fact that we are lights in this world of darkness – v.15 (Calvin’s comment)-
I John 1:7; Rev. 22:5
